Memories from childhood, pain during the race, prohibitive complexity and much more. The original is against the remake.
Let’s start with the preface.
About a week ago, I published an article about the mafia on my VK page, because the first part meant a lot for me, and of course I was looking forward to a remake. I wrote in many ways a lot for myself, but as it turned out, it went to some, and they began to write to me "Throw on Stopgame". Well, here I’m trying to publish an article.
By the way, a curious fact: I published the article a few hours before the video appeared on the topic on the YouTube channel of Stopheim, which is quite funny. True, coincidences in the content were not very much. In general, as they say on the Internet: "My first, do not judge strictly".
Attention! The article has a lot of spoilers. Videos attached to the article are taken from an open source – YouTube. Okay, let’s start.
In general, you should start with the fact that Hangar 13 made the right choice, thus deciding to revive the series after a failed, in my opinion, third part. All ingenious is simple: if someone did something well before you, try to repeat it, success will come immediately. And the studios even invented anything really did not have to, they have a ready plot, a successful story and the right to a game that has become a cult. In general, making a remake is a great idea.
And here it should be said a few words about how the developers decided to go. Hangar 13 consciously abandoned the idea to simply twist the graphics by making an ordinary remaster, but this is not surprising, given how out of the game the original game. However, the studio also abandoned the idea of simple transfer of the game to another engine. They decided not to follow the path of copying and decided to turn everything globally, make an edit of the plot, rewrite the script, change the characters of the heroes, replace the actors, voices, and so on. Roughly speaking, they decided to show the game from the other side. The plot is the same, the quantity and content of the missions is the same, but their content has been changed.
Is this approach bad? Definitely not. When I heard that the game will be different, more screen time will be devoted to the same sarah, new opportunities and transport will be added, I was even delighted. Why not?
Seeing the first trailers of remake, I first doubted, thinking “what a strange emphasis on the actor of the voice acting of the protagonist. "And much is not good different, but then, having thought about it, nevertheless decided that there is nothing wrong with that. All this does not have to make the game worse and nostalgic memories are just raging in me. I began to wait for the game.
And finally the game came out. Whether the studio managed to realize their ideas well? Let’s try to figure it out. Caution, spoilers, if someone is at all interesting.
Naturally, in the course of my thoughts, I will compare the remake with the original, but not so much in the content of what is happening, how much according to the criteria of logic and sequence of what I see on the screen. After all, Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, despite all its clumsy, was just such a logical and consistent game, and therefore became a cult. It is logical to present the same requirements on the remake, even if it actually differs from the original. Let’s go shorter.
Already when starting the game there are things that I want to note. This is of course very subjective, but I am very annoyed by stupid screensavers with the logo of the developers during the launch of the game, since they last for ages and they cannot be missed. If the game is loaded in this way, then it would be more pleasant for me to look at the usual loading screen than the same repeated inscriptions and animations with each start of the game. By the way, there were also screensavens in the original mafia, but they could be missed.
The main remake menu looks beautiful, the new background music pleased, but the developers also retained the main motive for the game. I like it like.
The ability to choose the level of complexity and subtly adapt the settings for myself is also naked, I immediately turned off the GPS navigator, all sorts of indicators on the roads and map, minimized the interface and put the classic level of complexity. All this pleased me very much and inspired before the start of the game. By the way, I went through the game in the original, English voice acting with subtitles. In my opinion, it is many times better than Russian, however, as in the original. We start the game.
The first cut-scenes, communication of the protagonist (Thomas Angelo) with Detective Norman and so on-delivered cool and gorgeously voiced. I watched all this with enthusiasm and pleasure. Naturally, I could not help but catch my eye how the main character changed. Outwardly, he became more brutal, and the character is more impudent, which, however, does not spoil him at all. At first glance. The content as before, Tom wants to pass the group of Don Salieri into the hands of the police in exchange for the safety of his family.
And now the gameplay began.
"An offer that cannot be abandoned".
The first mission of the remake is generally notorious and even on the classics is very easy to pass, unlike the original. As in the first mafia, by the will of chance, we need to help to escape from the persecution by the two thugs of Don Salieri. The only thing that strained me during the passage is the excessive cinema of what is happening and the dumb mechanics of separation from the chase. Seriously, to drive through the sections of the road under construction to see a mini kat-scenes, where the car of the pursuers is stuck into the fence-this is stupidly. And it would be okay 1-2 times for the pursuit, but no, this happens over and over again, and it doesn’t matter at what speed you are driving and whether there is actual persecution for you. You can go back at a speed of 10 km/h to get to the place where the trigger is triggered and see the cat-scenes. Scripts, scripts, scripts. I will return to this issue many more times.
In general, what I saw caused me not even an irritation, how much Spanish shame. Jump over the diluted bridge at the end of the chase is also extra. In the original, the first task was minimalist, behind you was one car from the windows of which gangsters shot at you, which in itself captures, and to escape from that car was still a beekeeper. Why add a dozen more practitioners to this scheme, I don’t know, but Okay, I will not criticize the remake only for not copying the original. It just looked like this somehow too … Hollywood.
By the way, while I wrote further text, I remembered something else. After passing the game, I decided to see the cuts of other remake passages. So, it turns out that the cut-scene with the jumping of the diluted bridge is triggered, even if you slowly call on it backwards. This is the whole point of many modern games, if you indulge what the game feeds you, then you will pass the uninhabited kinzo in one breath, lighting all this with a bunch of scribbled scenes. But if you go a little to the left, a little to the right … it’s better not to do this, otherwise you can tear your tummy with a laughter or, worse, be disappointed in everything. Okay, move on.
And then we have a taxi mission. They, in my opinion, came out in the remake of gorgeous. Everything is very atmospheric, the developers reduced the number of passengers, added dialogs, radio, otherwise set up routes, letting them look at the city. In general, there is just like and there is nothing to add. Differences from boring original missions were only good for the game.
This is a famous scene where you need to run away from two scumbags of working on Don Morello along the lanes under the groovy la Verdine. Everything would be fine, but this very la Verdine is not in a remake. It was not possible to see a copyright business and there was no way to squeeze out original music.
In general, I want to dwell on music in more detail. Jazz on a radio in a remake – cool, cool, there are no complaints about it, jazz is rarely bad. However, the fact that the developers failed to preserve the music of the original, not counting the title topic, of course I was saddened. Neither the compositions of Dzhango Rainhart, who created a unique atmosphere during trips around the city, neither the compositions of Vladimir Shimunek (I’m not sure that his surname may be inclined, may philologists forgive me during shootings and chases.
However, the music in the remake is also quite strong. Most of the compositions are absolutely in the subject, but still inferior to the original. IMHO.
Okay, back to gameplay. I went to chase the first time, like everything before her. Running looks dynamic, and KAT scenes at the end of the mission is very funny.
But then the first serious differences from the original game begin.
"Party with cocktails".
We are talking about the motivation of the protagonist. Both in the original and in a remake, Salieri people save the skin of the main character and make it possible to go through a test task, the essence of which is to break the cars of the enemy "family" of Don Morerello. That in the old, that in the new mafia, the main character speaks with his lips about how far from crime and that he never wanted to, but in the end it turns out to be doomed, there is simply no choice and therefore has to agree to work for Salieri.
However, in the original, to the proposal of Don Salieri to break the cars of Morello’s people, the main character simply silently agrees, realizing his position, but in a remake, Salieri simply offers Tommy money, to which he does not agree and begins to rush into battle. “I just want to get out of the bastards who broke my taxi, that’s all,” says Tommy. Bold, is it not true? But in my opinion this is a complete star. And no, the point here is not that the remake does not follow the letter of the original. Think about the context: yesterday’s taxi driver, far from crime, who does not have special skills, turned out to be a hostage of the situation, twice nearly shot and frightened to death, literally miraculously escaping from two people Morello, who previously also received a shoeman on the head a couple of times, wants to take revenge on Don’s most influential mafia grouping in the city. He is abnormal or something? How his character could change in a minute? I am not opposed to the main character to be impudent, but you must adequately present it. Well, if you make the character like that, then add more details, tell me that he served in the army, remove his words about “I was far from crime”, add something that would play into the hands of such a presentation. Tell me that he robbed stalls in his youth to earn money, in the end. But no, GG just, 15 minutes ago, said “I don’t want to deal with it, it’s even amazing how far I was from the criminal environment” and immediately rushes into battle. This is a logical puncture, in my opinion, I can’t call it differently.
In general, we must remember here: the main character has changed, he is not the same as in the original, he is more daring and decisive, not so soft. This in itself is not bad, even more realistic. Just the presentation disappeared a little, in my opinion.
Next: I was embarrassed by Kat-scene at the auto mechanic Ralphi. In general, the rewritten characters of Ralph and Winnie do not bother me at all, but this is what confused me is the attitude of Paul to Ralph. In the original, there is no enmity between them, respect is felt and only a small podge runs between the lines. So you see the integrity of the Salieri family, and Paul is not shown to us from the bad side. In a remake, Paul appears a frank asshole, which Ralph has a resent. By the way, further in the plot, this is not disclosed in any way. This is just a scene for the scene in which Paul behaves badly. In my opinion, this is important for the plot, I will later explain why. In the meantime, you can compare these scenes yourself.
What else is important – Salieri, unlike the original in a remake, has become more gossip. And here I found the first contradiction: in the remake of Salieri, among the rules of the family, the absence of a mat indicates, but he himself will use it further by the plot. However, this is a trifle. But what is more important is that Salieri in a remake, as in the original, is represented in words as a calculating cold -blooded boss, a businessman who, unlike a psychopath Morello, behaves restrainedly, which exhibits him in the best light. However, during the plot, I did not particularly notice something restraint or prudence in his actions, and comparing it at point-blank, I do not see much difference between them.
The gameplay along the mission is almost no different from the original, there is nothing to say. We go further.
Here we are expected to collect tribute around the city, and then the first shootout in the motel outside the city in the game.
The collection of tribute, https://noverificationcasinos.co.uk/review/spindog/ unlike the original, became more fun, the route was simplified, dialogues were added and all that. Much more interesting is the denouement of the mission.
There are no differences here at all. And what we have by gameplay? And we have gameplay from the third mafia. I can’t help but get to the bottom of one important thing, in my opinion, trifles. The main character Tommy, to the question of the gunsmith Winnie about whether Tom can shoot, replies: “He shot a couple of times at the fair,” clearly makes it clear that he does not know how to understand. Question: As a person who does not know how to handle weapons reloads the revolver in less than one second? He does it like a fierce professional, although in theory to charge a drum manually is not the easiest task. I will answer you as: the animation was taken from the Third Mafia, where the protagonist of the Vietnamese war veteran, and the developers simply scored to this, transferring it to a remake. Well what? But fast and arcade gameplay. Although nothing prevented them from changing the animation to a slower one or replacing it “shot a couple of times at the fair” at “Yes, I learned to shoot in the army”. By the way, the original can also be presented for this, they say, like this, yesterday’s taxi driver so famously pokes from the firearms for enemies, it is unrealistic! And everyone understands that this is a game convention, but after all, everything is known in the little things. In the original, the hero’s skills are in silence, there is no word about any fairs, in the revolver he recharge slowly, as it should be. The same applies to other types of weapons in the game. Yes, and to shoot from the window of the car with such surgical accuracy, while driving, he also did not know how to. Okay, we will write off all this just as conventions, okay.
Then we are demonstrated by the dialogue of Tommy and the detective Norman, where they discuss the details of what happened in the early 30s between Morello and Salieri. By the way, yes, the whole plot is the flashback of the protagonist, a story to the detective of the last 8 years of his life, who is not in the know. And tells the stories about what Morello psychopath, unlike Salieri. I can’t say anything about Morello, he is really aggressive, only his prudence is no less than Salieri, and the latter hardly have more excerpts, as I already wrote above.
It was a headache of all gamers of the beginning of the zero. In short, then here we need to help the rider Don Salieri win city races, but in the end we have to get behind the wheel of a car.
First in the plot. There is a small, but important difference from the original in the dialogue of Tom and Salieri. When they offer him to hide the racing car, in the original Tom is trying to kill Don and object, but in the end he still agrees. There we learn the character of the protagonist. The first emotion of the protagonist is a reluctance to accept what is happening madness, which will eventually give its fruits in the future. In the remake, we hear “okay, boss”, decisively and clearly. This is not bad, but it is important for understanding the character of the central character of the remake.
To drive with a mission, I did it for a while, however, I admit, not the first time. A couple of times I was restored by the timer, since the physics of the car was unusual and I did not always fit into the turns. In general, there are few differences from the original. First, roll in one place, find Bobby, add the car to the Luke mechanics, then back … By the way, about Luke. In the original, from this moment, additional missions were opened by mechanic Lucas Berton, to which one could go at will after the main tasks and fulfill his different assignments, for which he could fit us a tip on an expensive car, simultaneously teaching them to steal. The developers promised to expand the gameplay in a remake, add a bunch of everything to a boring original. I thought that Luke’s missions are one of the chic opportunities to realize the idea. Whether interesting missions on Lucas were interesting in the remake? Well, how to say … they are not in a remake. They were simply removed. Cut. And they did not replace anything, and the passage was made as linear as possible as possible. So.
I burned on the race itself. The developers promised to maintain the spirit of the original. I don’t know about the spirit, but they kept successfully the complexity of the race. Bolide management on classical complexity is simply terrible, and the musical accompaniment strengthened the already strong irritation. Here, of course, the curvature of my hands was already affected. I had to lower the difficulty either to high, or to the average, and in the end I went through the race from 1-2 attempts, did not bother. After the race, he returned the difficulty for the classic back, since it can be changed during the game.
What else was remembered – this is a long animation of the "failure" of the mission. That the usual failure, that the death of the protagonist is a long and dull animation because of which a lot of time takes the restart of the assignment. In the original, by the way, all this was faster. The end of the race has been changed, instead of Luke’s mission, we can hang out on the racing track, chat with people and take Paul home. There we also get acquainted with the character of Sarah. They did normally, I can’t say anything special.
Oh, romance. Extended dialogue in a walk, the scene where Sarah and Tom brought food to the starving, all this is done very cool and positively affects the atmosphere. It was a little strained that during the dialogue the words about the date of Sarah and Tom slipped, they say, at the scenes, they had previously discussed this. If so, they could have given more this time, and it seems to me that it would be better if the walk was generally their first interaction in the game. But this is already subjective, okay, I’m not a romantic.
Then we have to protect Sarah from some gopniks, and now I can say a little good about this. Plot here is practically in the original, but the gameplay is different. The combat system is wretched, it almost completely duplicates the second and third mafia, and looks very weak. In the first part of the fight, they were also the same Trechak, but there several people beat you at the same time and had to improvise, because you could really drop you. Now this aspect looks very casual. While fighting with one enemy, the rest of the blanks stand quietly and wait until you make their partner. It is almost impossible. Mafia 3, in a word. This is not suitable for the first part.
Strengthen my indignation of the animation of finishing. When an ordinary taxi driver learned to fight and neutralize people? He underwent military training at the Academy of Lincoln of glue by youth or what? Okay, let’s lower this moment. Sarah at home-cool. The fact that the rest of the walk was also cut, plus for the game I think in general, although in the original there was an important element of dialogue, when Sarah told about the difficult youth of Paul and about why he was so strange. This is not in the remake.
In the first cut-scene, we see “patient and restrained, not losing his head” by Don Salieri, who splashes drools and is clearly angry with the shit, which learned lawlessness on its territory. Well, one way or another, the villains need to be punished. Further, there are already few differences in the plot. The only negative that has become generally less interaction with Winnie and Ralph. Previously, taking a car and weapons from them to assign it was like a mini quest with some cool or not very cool dialogue. Now this is minimized, and Ralphi is practically absent until the end of the game. By the way, there is also a curious trifle: in the old mafia, all the cars of which you took over the plot, stood in the bar, and in the courtyard you can accumulate a decent collection by the end of the game, which was not enough space. In a remake, all cars are in a bottomless abstract garage, from where you can actually get any of them from the air. Trifle, but omission, minus atmosphere, as for me.
In this mission, I first encountered bugs in the game, saw objects flying above the ground and Paul, stuck in textures, which is why the opening of the door opening in the Biffon store eventually broke. I had to reboot the sai. The fights in general cut, but it is for the better, for with this combat system … And I would describe the shootings with two words: “red barrels”, this is all about them. By the way, I do not know if there is an opportunity in the mafia remake to fade a task due to the death of a partner? It seems that in a remake they cannot be killed even on classical complexity, as opposed to the original. Is this omission or not everyone decides for himself. In the original, this added hardcore to passage, it was difficult, was a rand. Now everything is much easier.
The mechanics of shelters are realized terribly. I generally negatively relate to everything that migrated from the consoles on a PC, but here it is really done badly. Croaches crookedly, grows crookedly, changes his position crookedly, when trying to drop, Tommy for some reason constantly beat hand-to-hand attack, although I changed everything in the settings. Strange. But what was more surprised, so it is the accuracy of enemies. If you are in shelter, you are safe, even if you stick out half of your head, arms, legs, you won’t even get into you on the classic, because you are in shelter! It is worth it to drop from the shelter, despite the fact that you are actually sitting behind the wall, you will immediately start shooting and getting on the limbs. Shooting at enemies is also strange, you always put it in the head with one, you need 5-6 bullets in the body, even from Colt 1911, which has a rather impressive caliber, and I generally keep silent about toy Thompson. Moreover, in this regard, I did not notice the difference between the classics and let’s say the average level of complexity (specially compared). The sounds of shooting and the behavior of weapons when shooting at me are pleasant, but the impact from hits and the accuracy of enemies, coupled with shelters, is continuous disappointment. Although we will be honest, the original was also not perfect in the aspect of shooting.
Stlas mechanics are also terrible. In the original, in principle, it was not particularly, and Stlas came to the remake of the mafia 3. If you are in shelter, enemies do not see you point blank, they are not embarrassed by a hat sticking out from behind a fence and much more. Animation of the attack from the back – trash.
But what I really liked was the KAT scene after the mission, when Tom could not sew a gopnik, and Paul did it for it. The scene itself is almost like in the original, except that Poli behaves more cringo, but the “stupor” of the protagonist, a look to nowhere and the loss of speech is beyond praise. Here the remake seems to be doing better than the original. Although the correspondence of this scene is a more impudent liking of the protagonist of the remake, and the original was the hero’s background thoughts about what Mom or Sarah would have thought when he saw him now. But oh well, here the remake is still good.
"A shootout in a brothel, on the roofs and in the church".
Here we are instructed to kill a girl with a very long tongue named Michelle, the hotel managing, as well as to blow up the office, and all this is accompanied by a huge amount of shooting everywhere and everywhere.
The first important plot difference is the request of Sam not to kill Michelle. This is perhaps one of the most important points in the game. To disobey the decree of the Don is like signing a sentence to oneself. Ask to disobey or join someone in a conspiracy, too, is equivalent. In the original mafia, Sam was a devoted militant of the mafia and such things would not at all fit into his character, but in a remake they apparently intentionally decided to make him others. Well, okay, this is an interesting turn to cause questions. Did Sam specifically asked for such a service to make incriminating evidence on Tom, or then he took a situation situationally to remember this? I don’t know, but Sam is clearly smart for the future perspective. And here we find one more contradiction: what is the original, what is in a remake – they say to us that Sam is a short -sighted person, and in the original it is really so, but in a remake the situation with Michelle speaks the opposite, because it comes out very visionary. I did not really like this moment in Sam’s character, he simplifies the understanding of the final moral of the protagonist in the end.
The hotel itself in the hotel and roofs are cool, there are few differences from the original, except that they simplified strongly. The church is already more complicated and the differences are present, but in general I am somehow neutral. That’s why I got burnt, so it is from the escape after the church. Sam stupid a lot, because of which they constantly killed me, it makes no sense to shoot with cops, they are infinity. In short, here I boiled and reduced the difficulty again, then returning it back again. It’s a shame when you cannot go through a moment in the game due to the curvature of the mechanic of the game itself, and not because of the lack of the necessary skills.
The conversation with Frank after the mission is one of the most important points in the original mafia and, according to idea, no less important episode in the remake. In both cases, the message of the conversation comes down to the warning by Frank Tom from stupid things, in fact, Frank helps him, giving him advice to quit drinking. But how it was reported in the original and in remake – two completely different things.
Firstly, in the original Tom and Frank actually become friends, more precisely, even Frank is someone like a mentor, he gives him really suitable tips and makes it not down, he simply laconically and clearly reports his information, but what to do with it-Tom himself decides. In a remake, Frank tells an absolutely stupid bike about a dog, actually pouring Tom with mud, comparing it with this very dog that every yard dog has, and even angry with the response of Tom. Honestly, I was shocked from this scene, for anything can follow from it, but certainly not the friendship of Tom and Frank. There is simply no reason for this, the dialogue looks stupid. What is it and why it is important? About it a little later.
"Canadian whiskey and shootout outside the city".
We go to the farm, control the loading of smuggling alcohol into trucks and leave – this was a plan. But everything went differently.
The mission on the farm is generally cool, there are a lot of action, shootouts, plot emphasized more on corrupt copies. Everything is very atmospheric, beautiful, and partners play a big role than in the original. Cool. The first part of the mission does not raise any questions. But a fragment with the pursuit after the farm is already more controversial. In the original, the main characters ran away and fired from Morello’s people, which is important. In a remake, they flee from the police, who even dragged the armored car (which looks tenderly, in my opinion). The whole chase was annoyed by the feeling that I was not playing the mafia, but I watch Indian cinema. By the way, somewhere in this area I seemed to score on classical complexity and reduced it to high or medium, I don’t remember anymore. Although there is something else: the initial dialogue of Tom and Poli, where the latter tends Tom about Sarah. In the original, serious conversations are already in the joke and Paul expresses its approval about Sarah, but in a remake, Paula again behaves like a fool. In my opinion, these details are very important, because at the original at the end of the game the emphasis was largely on the friendship of Pol and Tom, and the main character eventually talked about the value of friendship as a phenomenon. This is not in the remake at all, we are never closer than the same Sam.
After the mission, instead of Luke, we go to Sarah. And here’s what I will say: this is something beautiful. For one scene, you can already advance a couple of points. How touching is. First, the next stupor of the protagonist. This scene is shown to us and clearly makes us understand why the remake focuses on the Tom family. Sarah in a remake is the embodiment of an ideal woman. She does not ask unnecessary questions, does not saw her brains, she accepts the protagonist as he is. At first she tries to snort at him, sarcastically saying that “dinner has already cooled down, you are late”, but then he immediately understands everything, sees blood on the coat of volume and, instead of the removal of the brain, simply hugs him, realizing that he needs only her support now. That is why he invites her to marry him and focuses on his family in the future. Music in this scene by the way is also good, beyond praise. Bravo!
Perhaps this is the best scene in the game.
And then the moment came when we were instructed to remove Frank for betrayal. There are minor changes before the shootout at the airport, but these are all the little things, it’s a shame of course that they removed a mini-quest with a rofal guy named Joe, but come on.
The airport has noble my nerves. Only now not difficult, but how hackshire everything is done. Firstly, it was here that I really felt the imperfection of the control of the shelters and the problems of the lack of normal impact during shooting. Secondly, I felt the corridor of the level. In general, the mafia has never been much about freedom of action, but nevertheless it was an open world. In the original, you could really run through the entire huge airport and go through a task in a bunch of different paths, you could run up to huge hangars as you like, go in a runway and so on. The location of the hangars was preserved in the remake and I recalling the life hacks from childhood decided “Oh, but I’ll go around here here!"And guess what I saw? The inscription "Return to the assignment zone otherwise it will be failed" and a 10-second timer. Seriously?! Yes, go in the ass. They painted huge scenery and even do not give a step to make. This is a fat minus. And this problem will meet in the game more than once. Perhaps the developers in this way wanted to make it clear that I need to rush and therefore should not waste time on long rounds, but then they could make a mission with limited time control. And then the hour of reckoning has come, the conversation with Frank.
Naturally, as in the original, Tom does not kill Frank. However, the motivation by which he makes such a decision in the original and the remake is different. In the original, Tom releases Frank not because of banal pity, but because of love for him as a person, which he himself talks about. In fact, Tom repaid Frank with the same coin, saved him, and in many ways morally saved himself from his thoughts that sooner or later his “best friend will kill him”. In remake, Tom simply stupidly sorry Frank because of his family, because the look of the crying wife and daughters simply knock out a tear from him. Releasing Frank, Tom says something like “go to hell” or “if you are cursed, Frank”, thereby clearly making it clear that he does not love this person, he just pity him because of his family. And this is important. The main character of the original adhered to the principles, naive, but still principles. He did not kill women, could not kill a friend because of love and devotion to him. In remake, Tom does not touch the woman not because of the principle, but only at the request of Sam. He simply regrets Frank, well, of course, Tom appreciates his family (family-family, not mafia). This is generally the main focus of remake. Personal family of Tom. And here I see a serious logical inconsistency. If in the original, Tom chose between the obligation to Salieri and personal attachment to a person, then in a remake he chooses between the same obligation and abstract attachment to family values. In fact, Tom had no reason not to kill Frank. He had already flooded a bunch of people, and did not bother much about their families killed. So what is the difference? In the original mafia, Tom told Detective Norman that he did not crave violence, but the fate of other people is not very interested in him. An important detail that is not in a remake.
A certain indignation was also caused by the ending of the mission. We are shown how Tom “swept the traces” burned the house of Frank, and as a result we are shown by the graves of Frank, his wife and daughter. This is a strange moment. In the original, in direct text they wrote that “Salieri, despite the death of Frank, was going to provide his poor wives-Vdova until the end of his life, because it was something like a code of honor. Business is business, but the family has nothing to do with. In this regard, he involuntarily wanted to compare with the noble Don Corleone from the godfather. I understand that in a remake we were shown a more realistic version of the events that occurred, but in the original the story was deliberately presented in such a way that we wanted to sympathize with Salieri. He was noble in his own way, he looked much more profitable on the background of the same Morello. But no, here they show us that he calmly buried Frank’s family next to him and “never remembered Frank”, unlike the original, where he missed him. What do we tell us these differences? Don Salieri is the same bandit as everyone else, and he has no honor, moral and ethical code, he is just a greedy scumbag, and this is perhaps closer to reality. But is this good for a computer game? Work of art? For a remake on the plot of an old game. Okay, move on.
The task is to steal important documents from the safe at the villah villa.
I will not say anything plot, everything is fine, the changes are minimal, but cool. What was stuck is the curve of Stlas mechanics, once again. Here I felt her fully. She’s just wretched. Иногда охранники агрились, но тревога не срабатывала, иногда она срабатывала просто так. Иногда скрипты ломались и вместе с ними ломался медвежатник Сальваторе. All variability of the passage developers cheated. The first half of the mission is a strict stealth in the remake, the second is strict shooting. In the original, you could go through the task completely loudly and quietly, and in different ways. And even with much more poor mechanics, everything looked better. There are clearly more minuses in remake than pluses. I don’t even want to paint this horror.
The plot mission is not of particular value and is not much different from the original, powerful shootings, a cool mission. We need to conclude a deal with some jammed children to a new portion of Viskar.
The difference from the original is that Bill survives, and the pursuit is slightly different after the shootout. Everything was mainly cool here, with only exceptions – scripts. They are terribly crooked. For example, you must constantly be next to the truck during the chase, otherwise it will be exploded. It is worth behind at least a little – failure. The problem is that I almost immediately crossed all the pursuers, and the truck was absolutely safe, he was in the field of vision and I just relaxed behind him and was worth a little behind, he exploded for no reason before my eyes, as if he had been shot, as if he had been shot. Stupidity.
Don Salieri loves to eat deliciously, and therefore we take him to a restaurant to lunch. We do this because the personal bodyguard of Don Salieri Carlo fell ill, and later it turns out to simply surrender Don.
Two things need to be known about this task: less variability when passing than in the original, and the fact that Don once again is not restrained and does not pull on a rational. At the end of the mission, we are shown how he jumps on the head of his own bodyguard and with great pleasure cracks his skull. Is this something an example of an awesomely restrained person who constantly repeats that "Morello loses his head when angry". Yes, clogged with a key on the street Don Morello boxer – flowers compared to what Salieri did with Carlo. Here we will also find out that Tom left the same to finally drink, motivating it because Sarah will leave him, which I heard from the Don: "This is my idea". In my opinion, this is also an omission, because in the original GG quit drinking in essence thanks to a conversation with Frank. Okay, these are trifles.
"Party on the ship".
Here we need to remove an important city bump and part -time companion Don Morello.
Atmospheric mission in the style of Heathman, as before. The only thing that is now leading you by the nose along the corridors and is linearly show what you need to do unlike the original, where you yourself have to guess yourself. Plus, after the murder of Gilotti at the end, they added more shooting, which in my opinion spoils the overall picture. By the way, a fight in front of the toilet with some kind of dude who calculated us is idiocy. I don’t understand how no one heard a fight where his body later evaporated, because I didn’t throw him anywhere, and why he did not stir up on us before the adviser’s speech. Solid questions. By the way, I still remembered the phrase of the protagonist: “I would gladly put a couple of bullets into his head”, there was a feeling that Tom was losing this phrase and anticipated the battle. Not at all like him.
We begin the hunt for Sergio Morerello to the younger.
This chapter was greatly shortened and slightly modified, I can say little, everything is still cinematic and very exciting. But once again I will say: the linearity of the levels is a directly strong minus of the remake, here it began to irritate it greatly. Previously, the port of Lost-Haven was a huge territory and you could reach the ultimate goal in different ways, while in the remake around you there are completely invisible walls and some boxes that prevent you from passing. As a result, you just go along the corridor as in an ordinary jester, not afraid that you will be bypassed from the outside and so on. The murder of Sergio itself is pure Hollywood, I don’t know what to say.
By the way, what I really liked in the last few missions is the design of Bar Salieri. Backlated windows, a bunch of weapons and people with machine guns. Gorgeous work on the atmosphere, you really believe that the city is in the city and you feel this tension straight. It’s really great.
End to war, we are instructed to deal with Don Morello.
Previously, the mission was possible in several ways, now one, but more intense events and an order of magnitude more cinematographic. Is the chase of a burning plane in the city all the forth the pursuit of a burning plane, but in my opinion a degree of madness in the game sometimes rolls over. Enivee, mission as a mission.
An interesting and unusual task in which we need to remove a policy from a sniper rifle.
I think that the find with homeless people in an abandoned prison is cool, it is better than just armed with nonymy pistols in the original, the prison itself has become more confusing and in general it reminded me of some kind of horror, one-digit like. But tons of police officers after – it’s already too much. In principle, the part is still tolerant, but when you are forced to kill dozens of cops on the street … I don’t even know. There was a lot of insanity in the original, but it could at least somehow justify it logically. If there were shootings with the police, then in atypical places (on the roofs, for example).
The emphasis was that the politician was good. Drowned for suffrage for women and other. Thus, we are shown once again that Salieri is not such a good person. This is generally understandable, a good bandit is an oxymoron, but still I had at least some sympathy for him as a character before, but there was no remake in a remake. Actually, in the original mafia, on the contrary, it was indicated that the politician was dirty, he violated the law and so on.
"Purely for discharge".
This is a stels mission in the docks. We are instructed to steal a load of cigars in which diamonds are hidden, but in fact there is a drug. There were no drugs in the original game, there was an order to steal a cigar, but in the end there were diamonds there.
In the original, the task required ingenuity and it was possible to pass it in several ways. Of course, it was necessary to think up to everything on its own, exploring the vast territory. In a remake is another corridor with an absolutely understandable gameplay, and you already know in advance that all the boxes except the latter will be empty, you don’t steam about what they can notice, and even if they notice, you just come up with another blank and calmly go further. Why did they introduce the opportunity to drag the bodies into the game, I still did not understand, in my opinion I used this only once, a useless function. Next, I ran into a funny flush. We need to leave the port, bypassing the police barriers, otherwise they will begin to shoot at the truck. I traveled at all the barriers to the zigzags without receiving a scratch, there was no chase, I completely calmly reached Salieri’s warehouse in silence and saw the next Kut-scene: “Paul! Paul, you’re there, you haven’t hooked you?! “No guys, the boxes were a little with bullets.”.
What other bullets? They generally about what? No one was chasing us! This is a bug and some script did not work? Or I am too brilliant that I was able to go around all the barriers without staring at the police? Or this is another shortage of developers? Okay, not the point.
The topic with drugs instead of diamonds hidden in cigars is very dubious. In the original, we were told that drugs are a taboo in the Salieri group, which he himself talked about by the way and in the remake too. The game, as it were, again sent us to the godfather. But in the end, in a remake, they did not give a damn about this, exposing Salieri Mudakom once again. And yes, again, it is much more realistic than the original story, but whether it benefits the remake? Doubtful.
The mission about the inconsistent robbery of Poli Bank and Tom, which in fact they cross the road to the Don.
There are a lot of things to say. The robbery itself is quite cheerful, although again in a remake we are led by the handle and chew what to do, when in the original, independence was our best friend.
In general, the shooting came out not bad, but the feed is embarrassed. What are the original and remake similar? The fact that the motivation of Paul to rob the bank was the material side in both cases. Tom in both cases was upset due to the fact that the boss “throws them” and therefore decided to cut down the jackpot, but … let’s in more detail. In the original, gg was a naive boot, who was offended that Salieri did not tell him the truth and you see whether the ChSV did not allow him to come to terms with this. Naturally, the GG in the original was a fool, because drawing such conclusions, having worked as a militant of the mafia for 8 years at least stupidly, but here is the motivation of the GG remake, in my opinion, even more strange. So I did not like the lies of Salieri and, more importantly, the risk of drugs to sit down for a long time. Seriously? And the fact that you recently killed a couple of dozen police officers in the middle of a white day on the sidewalk not bother you? All the main characters have long been prepared for the highest measure of punishment, and they are soaring because of the cargo with foolishness, cool. The lack of a scene where Paul kills a girl who runs out of the bank is also an indicator. I repeat, the original emphasized that Paul was a closer friend than Sam, but through this scene they showed us that he was also a bandit. So, simultaneously emphasizing this, we understood the true essence of what was happening. Here we simply do not see anything, but this is probably not required, since Paul was already a negative character throughout the game, and more importantly: it was not a friend at all.
At the same time, Sam clearly says “I won’t give you up”, when, as in the original, he simply evaded the answer, abandoning the case, in connection with which Paul and Tom were admitted that Sam would not surrender them. Also, the content of the content did not benefit the mission. In the original, in order to get to the robbery, we could take a quick wheelbarrow through Lucas so as not to sleep in front of Salieri, bought weapons through a familiar Paul named Yellow Pete and only after they went to robbery, after discussing everything in the bank itself. All these possibilities are taken away from our remake. The robbery begins on the move, by itself.
In general, the ending of the game in the remake proceeds very quickly, at a high pace, preventing you from turning around. I don’t know this is connected with something, I think partly with the corridor of levels and the lack of preparatory tasks for them. And sorry.
Final. Sam kills Paul. We need to kill Sam, who choosing between friends and Don, chose Don.
Here I have similar claims to the remake like in the last mission, no bows, no native, corridor of levels, but more importantly, this is what Sam appears before us – cowardly, cunning and longing for profit. This is a very important final difference from the original. In the original, Sam is a militant who is a devoted to the mafia, short -sighted, but loyal to the Don, going to the end, for whom friendship and everything else is secondary. First the honor of the Salieri family. His faith in Don is blind, and it becomes a fatal minus for him, he begins to behave arrogantly, loses his grip and therefore Tom kills him. In a remake, Sam is just a coward that is afraid of Don, behaves like a neurotic, substitutes Tom, throws insulting provocations, and at the end of stupidity provokes Tom to shoot him. Snake, in a word. Tom correctly said that his chatter Sam only simplified the task for him. The remake in this matter is more realistic, landing. The original is airy, they show us how Tom crosses through itself, draws conclusions and goes to a new stage of his life morally. He was able to cross through pity, realized the value of friendship.
As a result, the ends of the mafia were opposite to each other, different motivation, different conclusions, different morality, only the shell of the same. In the original, Tom killed Sam avenging Paul, confronts the Don, putting his principles in the forefront. Tom to the last did not want to kill Sam, but he had to, he grew up as a character, realized that friendship is worth nothing. In the remake of GG, he simply could not do otherwise, he fell into a stupid situation, from which he improvisedly got out, he himself was scared (by the way, Tom’s heavy breathing throughout the final shootout deserves a separate husky), and Sam simply turned out to be the next caricature villain of which the volume of which the Tom eventually passes. Although in the original Sam is more likely anti-hero.
By the way, I really liked how Sarah feels the state of Tom before the finale.
Excessive dialogs and pathos speeches were added to the remake at the end, although there were not few of them in the original. In general, everything is very tearful and how in the original it takes for the soul, but. Why Tom, dying, is sure that "now they will not touch you"? In the original, this topic was repeatedly discussed and everyone knew that Salieri helps the widows of the dead and their families, but in the remake we were entrusted with the essence of the whole family of the same Frank, which the scene with a fabric of the house, the scene to the cemetery, as well as the reaction of Sam to the question about the family of Frank. Why Tom decided that his family was waiting for something else? By the logic of the remake, just the same, it should have been expected that the family will go after Tommy. Strange, in general. I also don’t know how realistic to say pathos phrases after they shot at you at point -blank from a shot of a shotgun.
So what in the end? What morality, what is the conclusion on the game? I don’t know. I have very mixed impressions. The original mafia, although it was a masterpiece, was objectively not an ideal game and is already outdated now. She just needed a remake. Whether the remake turned out bad? Probably rather no than yes, but with some reservations. A remake for me is more like a separate game than the same story. It all seems to happen in a parallel universe. All accents are set differently, the characters are different, morality and conclusions are different, other motivation of heroes. Is it bad on its own? No, not bad, but the game has obvious problems with the logic of the narrative. They wanted to redo it – they would have remade even more even more, otherwise they decided to sit on two chairs and it turned out very strange. Inconsistencies are too dofig, and the gameplay now and then enraged.
But there are a number of undeniable advantages in the game. Dubging, setting up personnel, in general, the cat-scenes watch it is a pleasure, the game is very atmospheric, the city is gorgeously painted, the game has an excellent arsenal and fleet. Logically, I have to evaluate the remake as an average game, but no, something in this game is made just terribly, and something is done perfectly, and all this does not averavating the assessment, rather the opposite.
It feels like part of the Angar 13 team caught the essence and perfectly coped with its work, and part of the team either did not understand either the cheat. They had great opportunities and they could do better, but in general I am still glad that the remake came out, even if in this form.
I will not put an assessment of the remake, let everyone evaluate it for himself. Mafia: Definitive Edition is definitely a good game that I would be happy to go again or two, even though there is nothing to do except collecting all sorts of Easter magazines. But if I were asked what part of the mafia I would recommend to pass or see to get acquainted with the story of Tommy Angelo, I would definitely recommend the original Mafia: the City of Lost Heaven. She is still a head higher, IMHO.
I don’t really want to talk about the technical part of the game, because this is not at all the main thing, but still a little will have to. Animation of people of some characters and in general the appearance (especially secondary ones) for 2020 … It looks ridiculous in places. Only in places. The game is not optimized in the best way, there were drawdings a couple of times, but in general the game did not interfere, played at maximum shoes. I also met bugs in the form of objects flying in the air, the characters stuck in the surroundings of the environment, and in general I was enraged by the shelter system due to the work curve. However, with all this, I do not consider the above as significant disadvantages, I just expected this, and it hardly affected my opinion about the game. Rather, it caused slight irritation from time to time during the passage. But in general, I liked graphony by the way, I am not too picky in this regard.
That’s all. I don’t know what will happen to this game series further, but for me it ended at the output of the second part of the game in 2010. I refuse to admit the third part, but the remake of perhaps on a par with the original would still put.
